Edinburgh residents warned over outdoor fires as nationwide alert put in place.
Edinburgh residents are being warned not to start outdoor fires after a warning was issued across Scotland.
According to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s (SFRS) website, the capital is in the extreme risk category.
A wildfire recently devastated Arthur Seat, with firefighters working around the clock for days to put out the blaze that wreaked havoc on the Edinburgh beauty spot.
The warning will be in effect until Tuesday, August 26 in the central belt and eastern areas, while other parts of Scotland are on alert until Monday, August 25.
Residents have been warned to be extremely cautious during this time. According to the fire service, wildfires can burn for days and destroy vast areas of land and wildlife, endangering the well-being of nearby communities.
SFRS Group Commander Mark Landels stated, “This summer has been especially dry, and we are advising people to avoid using anything involving a naked flame outside.
“In dry conditions, a small fire from a discarded cigarette or an unattended campfire can quickly spread out of control.
“The vast majority of wildfires are started by human behaviour, so acting responsibly can lower the chance of a fire starting in the first place.”
The SFRS added that people must always act safely and responsibly and adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
