LOOKING BACK

Industrial Blackburn captured in great aerial photo from 60s.

This could be the aerial shot that best captures East Lancashire’s industrial legacy. The photo, taken in 1961, depicts Blackburn’s mills and terraced streets next to each other. On the right, you can see the station with the canal snaking its way from top to bottom.

Eanam Wharf is at the bottom of the photograph, with Dutton’s Brewery on the bottom right.

Higher Audley Street begins on the left side of the photograph and curves uphill to the top.

Look at how many mills and industrial buildings along the canal. How many do you recognise?
