17 views of High Street West as the Sunderland road grabs the headlines once more.
A crucial part of High Street West in Sunderland made news when exciting new additions were revealed.
The bustling road was brought back into the spotlight when the Sunderland Echo revealed that new offices, recreational areas, stores, and residences were on the way.
Sunderland City Council applied to its own planning department for outline planning permission for a “mixed-use development” at 56-90 High Street West earlier this summer. The news allows us to look back at the history of the famous street, and we did exactly that with these 17 photographs that span from the 1800s until 2024.

3. Sir Walter Raleigh
A carving of Sir Walter Raleigh was first planned and created by John Frazer, a Sunderland carver and gilder.
He created it in Kyle’s workshop on Back Nile Street for Newbiggin’s Tobacco Shop on High Street West. It first appeared on display in 1890 and was relocated to Holmeside in 1913 following renovations. | se
