Fulham player hints money major factor in transfer choice – Loves life with Marco Silva’s side.
Fulham defender Kenny Tete admits he could have joined Ajax this summer.
They, however, did not want to pay him what Marco Silva’s team could offer. The full-back has spoken with NOS in the Netherlands about his busy summer.
After his contract with Fulham expired, he became a free agent and entered the transfer market.
They wanted to keep him, but the defender opted to wait and see what else was out there.
This led to his being connected with a number of clubs. It appeared that he was on the verge of signing with Everton. Former club Ajax has also been linked with an interest.
Tete came up through their development system and represented them at every level until making his Eredivisie debut in 2015.
He only appeared for them 55 times before leaving for Lyon in 2017. He spent three years there before joining Fulham.
He’s now an important player for the team, and they were thrilled to sign him to a new contract in the summer following initial concerns about his future.
Tete is delighted to stay, but confesses that decision was partly due to financial reasons.
Fulham salary couldn’t be matched
“I just renewed my contract, so I’m doing quite well. “Yes, I’m happy,” he replied. “It’s a small, family-oriented club.
A wonderful club in one of London’s more desirable districts. We’re a terrific club that has grown significantly throughout the years.
“Obviously, I was a free agent. There was some inquiry. “But not like, ‘Bam, we want you,'” he said of Ajax’s desire. “Things have changed at Ajax as well.
Salaries have decreased; presently, only the great players receive substantial sums. “I knew I wanted to stay here. If Ajax came knocking, That is always special. You remain a fan.
But I am grateful that I can stay here. In terms of everything: London, the Premier League, a fantastic club, and a competent coach.
Those are the things you should appreciate before going anywhere else. Otherwise, you can be trapped in Ajax. “And, eventually, I have to think about my retirement,” Tete adds with a grin.
“I believe they can afford me. It’s not like I make $30 million here, but it also depends on who they choose to give the money to.
