Sunderland fans in ‘dreamworld’ led by ‘nice guy’ Le Bris.
“We want to reach 40 points as soon as possible.” After nine games, Sunderland is currently fourth in the Premier League, confounding expectations this season.
However, manager Regis le Bris is still realistic, therefore he is adamant that reaching 40 points and ensuring Premier League safety remain the goal rather than entertaining talk of European football.
At the beginning of the 2025–26 season, the recently promoted team was one of the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League; Opta’s Supercomputer predicted that they would finish last.
However, after nine games, the Black Cats have 17 points, the greatest return by a promoted club at this stage of the season since Hull City had 20, in 2008-09.
“The emotions in the club so far are excellent, it’s impressive,” Le Bris said following the Black Cats’ most recent triumph, a 2-1 comeback victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
“We’ve discovered this sense of unity not only among the squad, but also among the club’s supporters. They deserve it. When the energy is like that, many great things can happen.
For us, the goal remains the same. The Frenchman is almost halfway to his 40-point goal, but who is the genius behind Sunderland’s outstanding season?
When Sunderland revealed Le Bris’ appointment in June 2024, the overwhelming sentiment was one of disappointment.
It had taken three months to locate a permanent replacement for Michael Beale, and the club had settled on a player who had recently been relegated from Ligue 1 in France with Lorient.
However, with the Black Cats ending an eight-year absence from the first division by defeating Coventry in the play-off final, the club’s supporters have expressed great pleasure.
“The fans love him,” stated BBC Radio Newcastle’s Sunderland analyst, Nick Barnes. “The results are the first things that win them over, and he has accomplished that.
Only five newly promoted teams have earned more points from their opening nine matches than Sunderland have managed this season
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, the French owner of the Black Cats, has been keeping a watch on happenings in Lorient. Sunderland had assembled a quality but inexperienced squad that need leadership.
Despite having no experience in English football and only two years as a number one, Le Bris was practically the ideal man to take on this assignment. “Regis Le Bris is a pure coach,” stated French football specialist Julien Laurens.
“All he cares about is the training pitch, completing his workouts, communicating his ideas, and the game itself.
What surrounds it is not particularly appealing to him. “Le Bris was once regarded as one of France’s greatest academy directors and junior trainers.
He is very passionate in coaching young players. He does an excellent job of outlining how they can improve. “I had no doubt that moving to Sunderland could work for him.”
‘Sunderland was perfect for him’
Growing up in Brittany, Le Bris was proud of his heritage and the area’s strong Breton cultural identity.
So, while moving to the north-east of England may appear to be a long way away, the 49-year-old has formed a strong relationship to Wearside. “He used to be in a club in Lorient that had so much identity,” Laurens told me.
“Sunderland was ideal for him.” He could only have chosen a team with such a strong feeling of identity and community as Sunderland since that is what he was used to.
“He’s a very proud Breton and he knows how much this means to people in Sunderland and in the region overall.” Le Bris is the Premier League’s first French manager since Patrick Vieira left Crystal Palace in March 2023.
Only four newly promoted managers in Premier League history have earned more points than Le Bris after nine games:
Kenny Dalglish, Bryan Robson, Phil Brown, and Frank Clark. “I’m hugely impressed,” Michael Carrick remarked of the Frenchman during Match of the Day
“There are so many favourable aspects to consider. They had four players from last season [in the squad against Chelsea], so it’s a significant change, and from a coaching standpoint, implementing that so quickly and accumulating the points they have is an incredible accomplishment.”
