Newbuild Dundee houses destroyed in major fire after being ‘torched’.
Overnight, firefighters fought a fire on a building site on Lothian Crescent in Whitfield for more than six hours.
Several newbuild dwellings on a Dundee construction site were destroyed in a huge fire after being “torched”. Overnight, firefighters fought a fire on a building site on Lothian Crescent in Whitfield for more than six hours.
Flames could be seen leaping into the air, and homeowners were advised to keep their windows closed owing to enormous plumes of smoke, as the fire broke out just before 10 p.m. on Thursday.
Crews just departed the area at about 4.30 a.m. on Friday.
The construction site is now a “crime scene” with an investigation underway.
Site manager says newbuild homes ‘totally destroyed’ after Dundee fire
According to David Anderson, site manager for George Martin Builders, which is building the properties on behalf of Angus Housing Association, there has been an increase in anti-social behaviour at the construction site in recent weeks.
He claims he was summoned to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday. Speaking to The Courier at the site, he said: “I came right here, and there were multiple buildings on fire. “Two blocks of four flats were completely destroyed. “We understand they were deliberately set on fire.
“There has been a lot of anti-social conduct at the site, including theft, broken windows, and break-ins. “What’s been going on is dreadful.
“The buildings destroyed were more than three-quarters complete – we’d only just put the roof tiles on one block yesterday.”
He continued, “The location is completely closed to us today, with police barring us from entering because they claim it is a crime scene. “I have a load of guys turning up for work and we can’t get in.”
One neighbour stated, “I originally smelt smoke, and when I looked out, I was astonished to see flames shooting out from the building site. “It looked pretty horrible, and at first I assumed the entire site was up.
“The fire department was just coming, and I watched as they entered the premises and began fighting the flames.
“There were about four or five engines, and I believe they stayed most of the night.” “I checked it out this morning, and the damage seemed to be quite severe. “I hope this wasn’t deliberate.”
Police remain at scene of Dundee building site fire
Police released a statement late Thursday night regarding the event.
It stated that “Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue are dealing with a large fire in the area of Lothian Crescent, Dundee.” “There are multiple road restrictions in the region, and the public is recommended to avoid it. “Residents are also being advised to keep their windows shut meantime.”
The barricade has since been removed, although at least two police vehicles remained on the area at around 7.30 p.m. The fire service reported that four engines and a height appliance were dispatched to the area.
