The former Norwich City manager confirms the leak of the QPR negotiations. Round-up: A Charlton Athletic player joins PFA training

At one stage this summer, Johannes Hoff Thorup was the front-runner to succeed Marti Cifuentes at QPR.

Prior to Marti Cifuentes‘ departure, former Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup has spoken candidly about his discussions with QPR regarding the head coach position this summer.

Thorup was linked with the QPR job.

Before the Championship season’s last game, the R’s placed Cifuentes on gardening leave after hearing rumors that his representation had discussed a new contract with West Brom. By mutual consent, Cifuentes left Loftus Road at the end of June, and he has since joined Leicester City.

Since then, former Rennes manager Julien Stephan has been in charge at QPR, but a number of strong candidates were chosen before the Frenchman. Among them were Pierre Sage, Ryan Mason, and Gary O’Neil.

Thorup, who was fired by Norwich City for missing the April play-offs, was another rumored name. The 36-year-old has now confirmed that he had discussions with QPR regarding the Loftus Road job. “It’s fair to say that there were conversations,” he said to the Second Tier Podcast.

“The folks at QPR I met with had a lot of great ideas and were quite open-minded. In my opinion, a club should be structured similarly to how they are doing it now and in the future.

“After a while, we were unable to agree on a few points. I think I can say that the contract was a part of it. It was also crucial that I didn’t immediately start working at my first job after Norwich. It happened pretty quickly; I believe our first meeting took place eight or ten days after Norwich fired me.

An ex-Charlton Athletic player has joined the PFA camp.

Tennai Watson, a former player for Charlton Athletic, has started training with the PFA preseason training camp in anticipation of the opportunity to sign with a new team. Last season, the 28-year-old made 21 appearances for the Addicks across all competitions, including a cameo of 22 minutes against Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final.

In their May retained list, Charlton Athletic confirmed that Watson had not received a new contract offer. Chuks Aneke, Dean Bouzanis, Aaron Henry, and Danny Hylton were all released along with the wide player; Hylton remained at The Valley as a coach.

Watson will be looking to get healthy with the PFA group, which features former Charlton Athletic player Jake Forster-Caskey and former Newcastle United player Paul Dummett, since his season was marred by injuries last term. In other news, a former QPR player has landed a “head-turning” transfer to Saudi Arabia.
