‘Lacklustre’ Argyle must learn from EFL Trophy exit.
Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley feels his side can learn from their “lacklustre” Vertu Trophy exit.
The Pilgrims fell 2-1 at Luton Town in a quarter-final postponed after the Hatters were reinstated earlier this month after losing to a Swindon Town team that included two ineligible players.
After conceding early, Argyle expected to go to penalties following Tegan Finn’s equaliser in the 77th minute.
However, Jordan Clark’s 89th-minute penalty shot ended Plymouth’s hopes of returning to the final, which they last reached in 2023.
“A really lacklustre performance,” Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon about the defeat. “I believe we now have enough trust in each other to be really honest. The reasons why will be the main takeaway from tonight.
“This group of players has always learned from mistakes and how to improve. We need to learn from this evening.”
I thought we were second-best in every category. We did not deserve to advance tonight, and there will be an honest inquest.
“The players will do that internally, they’ll take enough responsibility, and there’ll be conversations amongst themselves.
The disappointing thing is that we were outdone at the basics tonight, which has been our really underpinning source of success recently.”
