Mattsson and Robertson sign: Portsmouth’s dream XI for new Championship season.
Portsmouth are looking for new players ahead of the new Championship season. John Mousinho has already signed Adrian Segecic this summer.
Pompey News presents Mousinho’s ideal starting lineup against Oxford United on August 9.

Mattsson and Robertson drafted into centre-midfield
It’s no secret that Portsmouth require new central midfielders. Last season, they relied on loan acquisitions Freddie Potts and Isaac Hayden, both of whom have already returned to their original clubs.
The Blues have been watching Danish midfielder Pelle Mattsson for some time and are poised to make an offer for him soon. The 23-year-old now plays for Silkeborg IF in the Danish Superliga, but he appears to have all of the qualities to succeed in the Championship.
Alex Robertson is another player Mousinho wishes to have on his team. The Australian was on loan at Fratton Park in 2023-24 and dominated midfield as Pompey won the League One title.
He moved to Cardiff the next summer, but they were relegated, and Robertson still speaks favourably of his time at Portsmouth. This might potentially be a dream transfer for everyone involved. However, convincing Cardiff to sell may require a hefty amount.
Segecic to cut in from the right-hand side
Adrian Segecic generally played in the number 10 position for Sydney FC, but he can also play on the right wing, and it would not be surprising to see him start games there. Given Matt Ritchie’s desire to leave the club, he could be the ideal choice to start there.
The Australian might cut inside from the right to create problems in the middle, giving Jordan Williams room to cause problems on the overlap. Alternatively, we could see Callum Lang go to the right wing and Segecic in the centre.
Pompey need strength in depth to ensure they’re not dragged into relegation scrap
That dream XI would be capable of giving any Championship side a good game, and Mousinho is close to putting it together. Conor Ogilvie will most likely be given the captain’s armband for this team.
With this roster, the Blues should be able to avoid relegation and improve on their 16th-place performance last season. That’s fairly impressive given that Portsmouth has one of the lowest transfer budgets in the division.
Hayden Matthews, Marlon Pack, and Paddy Lane are all potential starters, but Mousinho’s roster lacks depth. In addition to centre-midfielders, Pompey’s manager will undoubtedly aim to add additional wingers and forwards to his side.
That should ensure Pompey can have a competitive team throughout the season, even if injuries occur.
