Immanuel College takes ‘positive step’ towards securing future.

Immanuel College at Elstree Road, Bushey, had declared plans to close after 36 years, but recently stated that “significant funds” had been promised to keep the independent Jewish school open.

In a new statement issued Friday evening (May 1), a representative for the school stated: “Following recent developments, we are delighted to confirm that the college will continue, supported by new funding and a strengthened governance structure, with Aaron Etingen as the incoming chair of the board.”

“The present Board of Governors voted today to move forward with these arrangements. This is a huge and good step forward, made possible by the collaborative efforts of many members of the Immanuel community.

“We are especially appreciative for the dedication of parents, employees, donors, and the larger community. The depth of feeling for Immanuel has been demonstrated, and the efforts made to reach this position deserve genuine respect.”Immanuel College. (Image: Immanuel College)

It is unknown how the rescue agreement came about, but according to the Jewish Chronicle, parents clubbed together to fund £13 million to save the school.

Immanuel College has been contacted for additional information.

The school spokeswoman continued, “We understand that the recent days have been upsetting. Our goal is to ensure the college’s long-term viability while upholding its principles, community, and future. We appreciate your continuing support.

We are confident in Immanuel College’s and your children’s future success. The first decision to close the school was based on declining pupil numbers, which were attributed to the implementation of VAT on private school fees and the expansion of Jewish state schools in Hertfordshire and northwest London.

The Times has rated Immanuel College the top-performing Jewish school in the country, and the Top School Guide listed it as one of the best independent schools in the UK.
