McNamara has had an injury-plagued season this year, playing only 577 minutes in the Championship across 16 outings. On Thursday evening, the defender posted a message on social media confirming the end of his 12-year career.

Danny McNamara following the Millwall exit
McNamara signed a one-year contract extension with Millwall last summer, but he couldn’t play until late November owing to a severe knee injury.
After recovering from his injury, the defender helped the Lions secure a Championship play-off spot near the end of the season. McNamara was an unused replacement in both legs of the play-off semi-final against Hull City.
The Millwall star joined the club as a 15-year-old and earned his first professional contract in 2017, before moving on loan to Welling United, Dover Athletic, Havant & Waterlooville, Newport County, and St Johnstone.
He has been a regular in the first team since 2021, and he was an important player for Millwall throughout the 2022/23 season.
McNamara is now a free agent and will most likely look for a new project that will give him more playing time than Alex Neil was able to provide at The Den this season.
