Matchday travel fears as Brighton railway station incident disrupts trains before Albion take on Manchester United

Matchday travel fears as Brighton railway station incident disrupts trains before Albion take on Manchester United.

On Sunday (May 24), emergency personnel reacted to an incident at Brighton Railway Station.

This forced Southern Rail to turn off electricity to the tracks, causing service disruptions on a portion of the network.

In a series of live updates made on X (previously Twitter), Southern Rail originally cautioned at 2.15pm that ‘no trains can run in or out of Brighton until further notice’ while the matter was resolved.

The operator later stated that the power outage only affects platform 1, therefore disruption is now limited to West Coastway services, with no East Coastway lines scheduled to be affected.

Passengers were also directed to live departure boards and travel planning tools via the operator’s website and live map service, which included Southern Rail live departures and a live disruption map.
At 3.47pm, Southern announced that power to the Brighton line had been restored. It added: “We may now run in and out of platforms 1, 2, and 3 as usual.

“We are now working on getting our services back on schedule.”

This incident had been resolved by 4.36pm.

However, trains to Portsmouth were delayed or disrupted due to a points failure in the Havant region.

Impact on football fans travelling to Brighton.

It was expected that the timing of the disruption may affect those supporters who had travelled to the Amex Stadium to witness Brighton & Hove Albion play Manchester United.

While Southern Rail claims that services between Hove and London were mostly unaffected, the West Coastway restriction and local congestion in Brighton and Hove caused delays on connecting journeys into the Falmer/Amex Stadium routes, particularly for customers reliant on switches at Brighton station.

Hundreds of people have also come to Brighton to enjoy the bank holiday weekend sunshine, as temperatures continue to rise. High temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius are forecast by Monday afternoon.
