Ipswich Town could hijack Birmingham City deal for Chuba Akpom

Before the clubs’ Championship opening-day match on Friday night, Ipswich Town may sabotage Birmingham City’s acquisition of Ajax striker Chuba Akpom.

The 29-year-old forward had been close to signing a loan deal with St Andrew’s, which, had the Midlands team won consecutive promotions to the Premier League, would have turned into a permanent move worth £7 million.

Since his old team, Middlesbrough, where he won the Championship Golden Boot award in 2022–2023, made a late approach, he has reportedly withdrawn from today’s medical in Birmingham, according to numerous reports this morning.

The EADT and Ipswich Star understands Ipswich are also showing interest along with Greek side Olympiakos.

Kieran McKenna is eager to add strength to a forward group that consists of only Ali Al-Hamadi and George Hirst at the moment. Liam Delap, the Blues’ leading scorer with 12 goals from the previous season, joined Chelsea earlier this summer after his £30 million relegation release clause was activated.

Before starting his career with Greek team PAOK Salonika, former Arsenal prodigy Akpom had a string of loan stints at Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull, and Brighton. After moving back to England to join Middlesbrough, he scored 28 goals in 2022–2023 and won the Championship Golden Boot.

A move to Ajax cost £12.3 million. Before spending the second half of the previous season on loan at Lille, a French team, where he scored three goals, he scored twenty-one goals for the Dutch powerhouses in his first and a half seasons there.

Prior to the big kickoff, Town is also still negotiating a contract to bring midfielder Jens Cajuste back to the team from Napoli.
