Historic buildings to be improved with £2m funding

Historic buildings to be improved with £2m funding.

More than £2 million in grant funding has been awarded for redevelopment initiatives in Aberdeen’s east end, which includes the historic Castlegate.

The funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland doubles the amount previously set aside by Aberdeen City Council (ACC) for the work as part of the larger city centre and beach strategy. A additional £1 million is being spent by local building owners.

The five-year initiative will include restorations to historic buildings in the Castlegate area, with a focus on shopfronts on Justice Street.

Regeneration work at the Castlegate is presently underway and is expected to continue around a year. The city centre is undergoing extensive reconstruction, notably on Union Street.

ACC finance convener Alex McLellan stated, “These grants for building owners, community groups and residents will supplement regeneration activities.

“It is really important to restore heritage where we can, we have a really proud heritage here, and these grants will go a long way in helping folk to do that.”
