Bradecroft pensioners ignored over deadly nightshade fears

Bradecroft pensioners ignored over deadly nightshade fears.

Pensioners living in sheltered accomodation claim Norwich City Council is ignoring their concerns about a poisonous plant growing right on their doorstep.

Residents of Bradecroft, a small retirement estate in Bowthorpe, have expressed alarm that deadly nightshade is emerging from the pavements directly outside their homes.

They are concerned about the potential harm it could cause to their pets or grandchildren if they accidently eat it.

And they believe City Hall has not taken their concerns seriously, as no one has investigated if the possibly lethal plant is growing in the authority-maintained asphalt.

The Bradecroft neighbourhood has now requested that the council send someone out to investigate the plant and do more to maintain the area.

COUNCIL NEGLECT

Paul Bell, 69, whose 91-year-old mother, Nancy Bell, lives at the property, said he has contacted City Hall about the difficulties but has received no response.

He stated: “I find it appalling that the council expects residents to maintain their gardens, which most of them do, but they have allowed this to happen. “Part of the contract with the council is that they maintain their gardens clean and neat, yet there’s deadly nightshade blooming on the opposite side.

“Last Monday, I called the council, and they were more interested in updating my mother’s information than resolving the issue. “I am concerned for everyone here. “It is sheltered accommodation; a woman living nearby has dementia.

“I am worried about my mum and the others that live here.” Nancy, who has lived at the location for eight years, added: “I just believe the council could do more.

“Not only me, but the others as well. “I pay rent here and they do not do the garden.” Jean Walton, who has lived at Bradecroft for many years, stated, “It is unsafe; anything that could harm a person should not be present.”

“I have grandchildren; my grandson could extend his hand and say, ‘Oh, I’ll try that.'” “The council obviously have not done enough.”

Morris Allen, another 84-year-old resident, stated, “It doesn’t bother me much.” “But it’s not good that it’s spreading here.

“The council has neglected our grounds. “They aren’t interested in their employment. “It’s a shame because it could have been nice. “We all try to keep our own little patches nice.”

Steve Cable, 70, who also lives in Bradecroft, stated: “I understand people’s fears. “To be honest, I have no complaints about the council.

“These days, everything revolves around saving money. “If you wanted it to look pristine you would have to pay more money for it.”

WHAT IS DEADLY NIGHTSHADE? dangerous nightshade is one of the most poisonous and dangerous plants in the UK. It is widespread in southern and eastern England. Just a few berries might kill someone.

Another member of the nightshade family that resembles the deadly plant is black nightshade, which is still poisonous but less so than its lethal sibling. Potatoes, tomatoes, and aubergines are all members of the nightshade plant family. We have contacted Norwich City Council for comment.
