FA Youth Cup Report | Argyle 3-0 Mangotsfield United.
Tashall Sandhu, Kian Burch, and James Sharpe scored in Argyle’s 3-0 victory at Home Park, advancing them to the second round of the FA Youth Cup.
Sandhu, who had contributed significantly to Argyle’s success throughout the evening, cut in from the left and curled an unstoppable strike into the far top corner to give the team the lead.
Tegan Finn and Seb Campbell had chances to extend the lead before Kian Burch hit the post after coming on in the second half.
Jamie Lowry’s side did eventually win the game late on, with Burch poking into the bottom corner and Sharpe curling a superb strike past the visitors’ custodian.
After a cagey first five minutes in which neither team was able to apply persistent pressure, the visitors had the first opportunity of the evening. Argyle was punished for a foul 30 yards from goal, and Billy Wimble took a shot that went far over the crossbar.
Sandhu then had his first opportunity, cutting in from the left, weaving past two Mangotsfield defenders and striking at goal, but Jack Sheppard was equal to the challenge and saved comfortably.
Campbell and Finn then demonstrated their first-team potential, with the latter sending in a threatening low cross that the visitors managed to clear.
However, the ball only made it as far as Joe Mwaro, who crossed for Frankie Maund’s head, but he was unable to guide it goalwards while unmarked.
Argyle proceeded to dominate possession, and Finn slid inside from the right and launched a shot at goal, but he missed the target.
The visitors then had their first clear-cut chance of the night, with Masood Garder receiving a ricochet and almost rounding Flower, but the Argyle custodian smothered the ball and Sam Hayman cleared.
Finn and Campbell then connected again, sending the latter through on goal in the right corner of the penalty area, but he could only reach the side netting from a tight angle.
Sandhu then gave Argyle the lead in the 35th minute, picking up the ball on the left and curling a beautiful effort into the far top corner, leaving Sheppard with no chance.
Finn should have made it two when a sumptuous through ball from Campbell sent him through on goal, but Isaac Comerford came back wonderfully to make a tackle and push the ball behind.
Argyle began the second half well, with Malachi Davy and Sandhu combining on the left. The latter crossed low for Campbell, but he couldn’t connect to get past Sheppard.
Davy was once again the provider for Argyle, whipping in a low cross that Mangotsfield had to clear for a corner.
Campbell took the corner and nearly found Mwaro, but he missed the kick. Burch was introduced for Jamie Lowry’s team and quickly appeared lively.
He picked up the ball centrally, fed Mwaro, who had his original low cross cleared back to him, and the defender found Burch, who shot goalward but only hit the top of the net.
He was then at the heart of more Argyle fine play, picking up the ball on the edge of the box and seeing his shot clip off the far post.
Moments later, Toby Maclean surrendered a simple free kick wide on the right, which Mangotsfield whipped into the area and found Pablo Benitez Dorado’s head, but he missed the target.
That was the visitors’ last chance, as Argyle eventually won the game late on, as the game became more stretched.
Sandhu assisted on his earlier goal, driving to the byline and cutting back for Burch to finish in the bottom corner.
Sharpe then curled a first-time attempt into the far corner to give Argyle their third goal and a spot in the second round draw.
A good evening’s effort for Lowry’s younger side.
