Residents’ views on Crowborough Training Camp migrant plans

Residents’ views on Crowborough Training Camp migrant plans.

Crowborough residents are divided over plans to host asylum seekers at a military facility.

Downing Street has stated that relocating asylum seekers to government-owned military land will be popular with the general public.

However, Wealden MP Nus Ghani has stated that she is “disgusted” that Wealden District Council agreed with the Home Office to temporarily shelter migrants at the Crowborough training camp, and she has launched a petition against the plan.

A public meeting was scheduled for Thursday evening, organised by Reform UK’s Sussex Weald branch, to discuss the ideas.

Sandra Davies, 58, stated, “I work in housing for homeless people. For me, it is far preferable that migrants and other people are provided a place to live rather than not.

A local who did not want to be identified stated, “I believe everyone has the right to seek solace, especially since we have caused so many problems in other countries; we must remember they are human.”

Craig Thomas, 35, concurs: “We have a responsibility to support migrants, but I think the concentration of migrants will be proportionally high versus other areas.” However, John and Susan Abbot, aged 70, described the ideas as a “disgrace”.

Carol Mills, 60, agreed: “I don’t think anyone in Crowborough wants this to happen. “The accommodations are too pricey.

I believe the barracks are being used because they are out of the way, although they are not appropriate for this purpose.

Perhaps a children’s home would be more practical.” A citizen who did not want to be identified stated, “Using the barracks to house migrants is better than hotels because the revenue generated will not go into the private hotel owners’ bank accounts.”

Some residents expressed dissatisfaction with how the problem was handled. Angie expressed the opinion: “I think the locals should have been consulted on it.”
