Christmas lights in Battle, East Sussex, won’t be installed

Christmas lights in Battle, East Sussex, won’t be installed.

Traditional Christmas lighting will not be put this year since it has been declared “unsafe for use.”

On October 29, Battle Town Council said that a routine safety check revealed that older portions of the town’s festive lighting infrastructure required repair before they could be securely reused.

A comprehensive electrical installation condition analysis indicated that the majority of the scheme needed to be replaced and was not suitable for usage this year.

A council official stated, “This is hugely disappointing and will result in no festive lighting on or across the High Street.”

However, the Battle Town Football Club has put up a community campaign to assist the community in purchasing and installing Christmas lights. The fundraising has already surpassed its £7,000 goal, with over £8,400 raised so far.

The fundraising website indicates that the funds will be utilised to put Christmas lights along Battle High Street. In response, the Battle Town Council stated that it is not associated with the fundraiser.

On November 5, the council stated: “Battle Town Council is aware of an independently started crowdfunding campaign to generate funds for Christmas illumination in the town.

“While we understand and appreciate the kindness and community spirit that has driven this effort, the council would want to clarify that it was not engaged in its creation or management.

“The organiser is acting independently and any donations or commitments made are a private matter between contributors and the fundraiser.”

The council also noted that it is looking at possibilities for the necessary repairs in 2026 and invites continuing engagement with local partners and businesses to make this happen.

It praised citizens, businesses, and volunteers for their continuous support and enthusiasm in making Battle shine bright this Christmas.

The council later clarified that it is only responsible for the current festive lighting infrastructure on buildings, which has been deemed unsafe to use.

It stated that if property owners want to install illumination on their property or on the High Street, they must first determine what licenses, permissions, and insurances are required.
