‘Shook up’ pair flee flat following fire at takeaway in Hartlepool’s Murray Street.
A youngster has described how he and his flatmate were forced to evacuate their flat after a fire broke out at the takeaway below.
Part of Murray Street in Hartlepool was closed after Cleveland Fire Brigade responded to a fire at Murray’s Fried and Grill Chicken on Wednesday, November 19, at around 7.20 p.m. Carl Thomas Gorse, 19, and his flatmate were at their home above the takeout at the time.
Carl Thomas, often known as CT, stated: “We were playing a game on the PS5 PlayStation in the back bedroom when we smelt smoke and fire.”
“At first, we assumed it was due to the extension cable we had. “We saw an orange glow and smoke down the stairs, so we ran out the front door into the street.”
CT, a YouTube railway content creator, stated that staff from the takeaway were standing outside and that the inside of the restaurant appeared “very orange”. Firefighters quickly arrived to stop the fire from spreading.
CT stated that their flat smells of smoke, but none of their items were destroyed. He did, however, add that the experience has left him “shook up” and that he is now looking for a new home to live.
Murray’s Fried and Grill Chicken has been approached for comment. The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
Cleveland Fire Brigade said that they despatched three fire engines to the incident from Hartlepool, Headland and Billingham stations and were present until 7.46pm.
