Works begins on luxury care home at former Broughty Ferry Cambustay Hotel site.
The nineteenth-century landmark was dismantled in 2022.
Work has begun on a multi-million pound care home development on the former Cambustay Hotel site in Broughty Ferry.
In 2021, Dundee City Council approved the Meallmore care group’s plans build a 54-bed nursing home that will specialise in dementia care.
It was planned for the site of the 19th-century hotel on Dalhousie Road, which had closed the previous year after more than a century in operation.
Cinema and beauty salon included
The new care facility will offer outdoor terrace spaces on the upper levels, as well as individual garden areas accessible from the ground level.
It will also feature a theatre, café, private dining room, and beauty salon.
Around 60 to 70 full-time equivalent employment will be produced in the surrounding area, including nurses, care assistants, administrators, and managers.
The CHAP Group is carrying out the construction, which is expected to be completed in early 2027. Plans for a care facility on the Cambustay Hotel property were initially announced in December 2019.
An application was made to Dundee City Council, initially seeking authorisation for a 70-bed facility. This was then lowered to 64 to conserve more of the trees on the property.
However, the proposal was ultimately withdrawn in July 2020. A second application for the 54-bed care home was submitted in February of the following year.
It was approved seven months later by council officers with delegated authority.
History of the Cambustay Hotel
The Cambustay Hotel was constructed in the mid-1800s by Thomas Taylor, a Ferry jute entrepreneur who controlled Thomas Taylor and Co.
Mr Taylor was a community leader and one of the original members of St Stephen’s Church in Broughty Ferry.
After his son died, Cambustay began to be rented out as a boarding house in 1941. For long of the twentieth century, it was best known as a hotel, although it now just serves as a tavern and restaurant.
