Exclusive: Following Sheffield Wednesday’s departure, several teams undertake discussions with Michael Smith at Middlesbrough

Michael Smith, who is departing Sheffield Wednesday this week, has spoken with Middlesbrough.

Due to their financial difficulties, Sheffield Wednesday has been under three different embargoes in recent months, one of which has been lifted.

A number of important Owls players have left in the midst of the unrest, which is expected to include Danny Rohl’s departure, as EFL Analysis previously revealed.

On July 17, Michael Smith and Josh Windass’ contracts with Sheffield Wednesday were terminated. We understand that Middlesbrough is one of the teams interested in signing the 33-year-old when he becomes a free agent.

Negotiations between Middlesbrough and Michael Smith

Middlesbrough has reportedly held talks with Smith, according to Graeme Bailey, main transfer correspondent for EFL Analysis.

Clubs throughout the EFL, including Wrexham, Rotherham, Stockport, and MK Dons, have expressed interest in the 33-year-old.

Last season, Smith participated in 41 Championship games for Sheffield Wednesday. He was the team’s top scorer with eight goals and four assists. In 161 games in the second division, the Englishman has scored 30 goals and provided 11 assists.

With thirteen goals, Tommy Conway led Middlesbrough in the 2024–2025 Championship.

There are three more signings in negotiations for Middlesbrough.

The Teesiders have been engaged in talks with many additional possible players in addition to Smith.

We know that Boro has had conversations with Alfie Jones, Callum Britain, and Danny Ings.

Ings had intended to join the Premier League after leaving West Ham United, but MLS teams have also been linked to the striker.

Blackburn Rovers turned down Middlesbrough’s £1.75 million offer for Britain, which was made public earlier this week. They think he is worth £3 million.
