Second arrest made in Peacehaven mosque arson investigation

Second arrest made in Peacehaven mosque arson investigation.

Detectives probing a devastating arson attack on a mosque in Peacehaven have made a second arrest.

Emergency services were called to the building on Phyllis Avenue at 9.50 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, after reports of a fire at the community mosque.

Two people wearing masks and dark clothing approach the front entry, spray an accelerant, and set fire to the doorway, according to video footage from the incident. Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded immediately and extinguished the fire before it could spread further.

Fortunately, no one was injured inside the mosque at the time, but the fire did extensive damage to the structure and a neighbouring vehicle.

A 46-year-old man from Littlehampton was arrested on Monday afternoon (6 October) on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life. He has now been released on conditional bail as investigations continue.

Officers confirmed a second arrest on Tuesday evening (October 7). A 25-year-old male from no permanent home was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to harm life. He remains in police detention.

According to Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cullimore of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, there may be individuals in the community who have information about the perpetrators of this reckless attack.

He encourages anyone with such information to come forward. Please contact us or call 101, referencing Operation Spey.

Superintendent Rachel Swinney stated, “We work with local religious communities to support them and address their concerns.”

“Sussex Police has a zero-tolerance policy towards hate crime, and there is no place for hate in the county. “If you are concerned about your safety or have witnessed any hatred or illegal activity, please speak with an officer, email us online, or call 101.

Always dial 999 in an emergency.” Police are seeking to anyone who noticed unusual behaviour in the vicinity or has CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage to come forward.
