‘It would be absolutely wonderful’ – Millwall’s 1987-88 player of the year wants Alex Neil’s Lions to match unique achievement.

By Tom Appleby DANIS Salman was part of Millwall’s most unique group in history, but he hopes this is the season the Lions write the second chapter of their promotion to the top division. Salman was a defender for John Docherty’s side, who gained promotion to the First Division for the first time in 1988.

The Lions won the Second Division title by four points over Aston Villa, barely a year after finishing sixteenth and three points above the relegation zone. It marked the end of a historic five-year trip for the team, who had averted relegation to the fourth tier on the penultimate day of the season under George Graham in 1983.
